Before and after · · 5 min read

It's time to move from Instagram to an online store when messages take up more of your time than the selling itself: when you answer questions about price and size every day, lose orders in your DMs and can't say for sure what you have in stock. Instagram is where people discover you. An online store is where they buy without waiting for you. Many businesses in Albania, from clothing boutiques in Tirana to honey producers in Dibër, start selling on social media. The question isn't whether Instagram works, but how long it's enough.
How selling through messages works, and where it gets stuck
The pattern is familiar: you post a product, someone writes “how much?”, you reply, they ask about the size or colour, want more photos, send their address and number, and then wait. For a few orders a week that's fine, even pleasant. Customers feel heard.
The trouble starts when orders grow. Every sale needs a whole conversation, and every conversation needs someone online. Messages sent at night wait until morning, and some customers don't wait. Order details end up spread across Instagram, WhatsApp and a notebook.
Signs it's time for an online store
- You answer the price question every day. If “how much?” is your most common message, prices need to be visible somewhere.
- You lose orders. A forgotten message, a mistyped address, a product sold twice.
- You're not sure about stock. You check the shelf before you reply to a customer.
- Customers ask to pay by card. Especially customers in the diaspora or people buying gifts from abroad.
- You have more products than a profile can show. Customers can't search or filter on Instagram.
- You want ads with a measurable return. Without a store, it's hard to know which ad brought which sale.
If you recognise three or more of these, an online store is no longer a luxury. It's the way to grow sales without growing the hours you spend on your phone.
Before and after: selling in DMs versus an online store
From Instagram to an online store
Before
- Every order takes a conversation of several messages.
- Price, sizes and colours are given one by one, to each customer.
- Orders live in DMs, notes and memory.
- Stock is checked by eye, and sometimes the same item is promised twice.
- Payment is cash on delivery, or a transfer arranged by message.
- Sales stop when you're offline.
After
- Customers choose, order and pay on their own, at any hour.
- Every product has its photos, price, sizes and variants on the page.
- Orders land in one panel, with address, phone and status.
- Stock updates with every sale, and sold-out items stop selling.
- Customers choose between card, payment link or cash on delivery.
- Instagram still brings people in, but sales don't depend on your reply.
An online store brings products, orders, payments and stock together in one panel. If you're not sure where to start, our guide on how to sell online helps you pick a route based on your products and customers.
What changes day to day
An online store doesn't just change the shop window. It changes the routine behind it:
- Orders. Instead of writing them down, you see them in the panel, sorted by status: new, being prepared, shipped.
- Payments. Customers can pay by card, by link or on delivery. We cover the real options available in Albania today in online payments in Albania.
- Invoices. In Albania every sale is fiscalised in real time under Law No. 87/2019, with no turnover threshold. Online orders need to fit the way you fiscalise sales, and that needs planning from the start.
- Delivery. Delivery terms, times and costs are shown before payment, not after the customer asks.
- Returns. A clearly written returns policy avoids arguments and builds trust.
Instagram isn't going anywhere: how they work together
Moving to an online store doesn't mean abandoning Instagram. If anything, social media becomes more useful, because every post, story or ad now has somewhere to send people. The link in your bio, product tags and story links take customers straight to the product, with a price and a buy button.
What sells best is a well photographed product, with a look people recognise as yours at once. We explain why that builds trust in visual identity and customer trust. A single photo shoot can feed your store, your social media and your ads for months, as we explain in one photo shoot, many assets. That's what our photo, video and copy service is for. And when you're ready to promote, marketing measures every campaign against real sales.
What to have ready before you open
- A product list, with names, prices, variants and quantities.
- Clear photos of every product, ideally with the same background and light.
- Delivery terms: areas, costs and times for Tirana, for other towns and, if you ship there, abroad.
- Terms of sale and returns. Law No. 10128/2009 on electronic commerce sets rules for selling online and for the information a buyer must be given.
- A privacy policy. Customers' names, addresses and phone numbers are personal data, protected by Law No. 124/2024.
- A way to get paid: card, payment link or cash on delivery, depending on what your bank or provider offers.

- Will I lose customers who are used to ordering by DM?
- Not if you make the move carefully. You can keep answering messages, but with a link to the product. Many customers prefer ordering directly, because they don't have to wait for your reply.
- How many products do I need to open an online store?
- There's no minimum. A store with a few products, well photographed and described, often sells better than a large, incomplete catalogue.
- Can I accept card payments in Albania?
- Yes. Albanian banks offer virtual POS for websites, and there are payment institutions licensed by the Bank of Albania that offer payment links. See online payments in Albania for details.
- Who manages orders once the store is open?
- You do, from the panel. Orders, products and stock are managed from your phone or computer. We cover setup, maintenance and updates depending on the agreement.
